Have you tried the NEW PlanetRealm demo?
Hey there!
We've been really bad at keeping online presence and updates coming lately... BUT we were really good at developing! Based on the feedback that we got from YOU right here on itch, we've been working on some big changes to PlanetRealm.
We launched a new project since there were a lot of changes made. We'll keep updating that one from now on, so if you were wondering what is gonna come out of alpha, go check it out, add it to your collections, rate it... whatever you feel like! We are still hoping to get as much feedback as possible, so if you can let us know what you think, it'd be greatly appreciated!
What's been going on?
First of all, why did we disappear for so long? Well, we were trying to stay on top of social media with daily posts before the alpha demo launch and it started proving too much to keep up with since we can only work on this project in our free time anyways. The guy who takes care of posting, Jani (me), had some personal stuff to take care of soon after alpha demo launched and put the project aside for a while.
For a month or so, Tine was updating the code and making everything run smoother while we were waiting for as much feedback as possible to roll in. When I got back to the project at the start of summer I was eager to be designing so we never really picked up posting again...
Where does the project stand?
We switched to Unity's Low Weight Render Pipeline, which brought some visual changes. The outlines are sadly not visible in the distance anymore due to renderer's limitations and we also opted out of edge detaction as the lack of outlines made too much of a difference between the planet you're standing on and the rest of them. We're eagerly awaiting Universal Render Pipeline to try and bring the outline back!
Gameplay-wise, a lot has changed! We implemented the puzzle on the first planet and plan to expand the starting area even further to build the story bases. The second planet is no longer a maze (it was mean to make you aimlessly walk around with no clues in first 5 minutes of gameplay, trust me, it wasn't intentional, newbie mistake) but a whole new planet featuring brand new puzzle mechanic!
We also rearanged the random planets that now fill up the scene a bit better, and once you beat the demo you are now free to roam on any planet you see!
While we still didn't have a chance to test on a wide range of PCs, the performance has been greatly improved thanks to Tine's coding. There's undoubtedly a lot of work left to be done, but we feel like we made a giant leap forward with the new demo, both in things you'll experience as a player and with out understanding on game design and even some marketing. We actually got a few articles published!
